My story behind the name

There is a book I read and fell in love with a few years ago called 'The Secret Life of Bees'. While reading there was a character called May who touched me the most and has stuck with me ever since. She is one of three sisters living in this big, bright pink house. May is extremely sensitive and highly empathic, so much so that the news can not be put on in the house or she will crumble from the pain she feels on behalf of those being affected by the days tragedies. Due to this her life is hard and her sisters work hard to protect her and help her cope.

For me the most touching passage of the novel is where the main character, who is at this point living with the three sisters, asks August, May's older sister, about the colour of the house:

"How come if your favorite color is blue, you painted your house so pink?"

She laughed. "That was May's doing. She was with me the day I went to the paint store to pick out the color. I had a nice tan color in mind, but May latched on to the this sample called Caribbean Pink. She said it made her feel like dancing a Spanish flamenco. I thought, "Well, this is the tackiest color I've ever seen, and we'll have half the town talking about us, but if we can lift May's heart like that, I guess she ought to live inside it."

"All this time I just figured you liked pink."

She laughed again. "You know, some things don't matter that much, Lily. Like the color of a house. How big is that in the overall scheme of life? But lifting a person's heart - now, that matters."

I love the idea of these women living in that bright pink house purely for the sake of allowing their sister what might have been only as little as a short while of happiness while painting. To them the tackiness and being talked about was worth it, just for the sake of lifting their sisters heart.

Therefore the idea of that bright pink house always makes me happy and has inspired me countless times. So I figured, why not name this blog after something that makes me happy? Particularly as no cute name actually relevant to its contents has come to mind yet and I am too excited to start to let the little matter of finding a name that makes sense hold me back.

  1. I'm already a fan of this blog just because of the name (well, the reason behind the name). I'm looking forward to your Dubai-related posts. I want to see some pictures! Please post more.
